Providing SAFE firearms training

Basic Pistol

This course is the recommended precursor to the Personal Protection in the Home, which is the course recognized by the State of Michigan to fulfill the training requirement to apply for a Concealed Pistol License.

Teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude for owning and operating a pistol safely.


This course is at least 8-hours long and includes classroom and range time learning to shoot revolvers and semi-automatic pistols. Students learn NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; pistol parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; range rules; shooting from the bench rest position, and two handed standing positions; cleaning the pistol; and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, take a Basics of Pistol Shooting Student Examination, and course completion certificate.

Whether you are interested in recreational shooting, competition, hunting, gun collecting, historical reenactment, home safety, or personal protection -- the basics are where to start! Basic Firearm Training Courses teach you universal safety principles and help you develop the knowledge, skills, and attitude that are needed to successfully pursue your shooting interests.

First day of classes students should bring: Valid Michigan ID, pens/pencils, paper to take notes, and any balance due.

Final Day of class bring; Eye and ear protection, a safe operable handgun in legal enclosure, and 100 rounds of ammo.

DO NOT BRING THE GUN or AMMO INTO THE CLASS ROOM!

Saturday classes; We suggest you bring a lunch, drinks & snacks with you. We work through lunch. Coffee is provided.
