Providing SAFE firearms training

Personal Protection In the Home

This is the course recognized by the State of Michigan to fulfill the training requirement to apply for a Concealed Pistol License.
(Formerly known as a CCW permit)

Teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to the safe and efficient use of a handgun for protection of self and family, and to provide information on the law-abiding individual’s right to self-defense.

This is an eight-hour course. Students should expect to shoot approximately 100 rounds of ammunition. Students will learn basic defensive shooting skills, strategies for home safety and responding to a violent confrontation, firearms and the law, how to choose a handgun for self-defense, and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection In The Home handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, the Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, and course completion certificate.

The NRA Basic Personal Protection In The Home Course participants must be law abiding, adults (at least 21 years old), and should be experienced shooters (shooters able to show mastery of the basic skills of safe gun handling, shooting a group, zeroing the firearm, and cleaning the firearm) to maximize what can be learned from this course. Proof of shooting experience can be one of the following: NRA Basic Pistol Course Certificate, NRA FIRST Steps Course Certificate, NRA pistol competitive shooting qualification card, military DD 214 with pistol qualification, or passing the Pre-Course Assessment.

This is not a beginner level firearms safety class. Please be familiar with your handgun. You should know how to load, fire, and unload it in a safe manner. This is not the time to bring a firearm to class that you do not know how to operate. Spend some time getting familiar with your handgun and how it functions; please read your handgun manual.
If you are not familiar with your handgun, or do not own one yet, please consider taking our Basic Pistol course prior to enrolling in this class.

Sorry, but we do not allow single action only revolvers. (We do not consider this type of firearm to be adequate for defensive purposes in the hands of the average person; they are painstakenly slow to empty & reload.)

First day of classes students should bring: Valid Michigan ID, pens/pencils, paper to take notes, and any balance due.

Final Day of class bring; Eye and ear protection, a safe operable handgun in legal enclosure, 100 rounds of ammo, and a hat or cap with brim (to deflect hot spent shells and prevent them from getting between your safety glasses and eyes). Wear suitable clothing for the weather conditions. Range time is outdoors for up to 2 hours.

DO NOT BRING THE GUN or AMMO INTO THE CLASS ROOM!

Saturday classes; We suggest you bring a lunch, drinks & snacks with you. We work through lunch. Coffee is provided.
